Crime Victims - A Closer Look At The Victims

ffb4What is it in us that cause us to kill? What makes us feel that we have the right to take something as precious as another person's life? The Crime Victims’ Group of Jackson, MS is still searching for the answers to these questions. The truth is that God is the giver of life and no one has the right to take it away. Nevertheless, many people lose their lives daily based on someone else's disregard for human life. I had the pleasure of being invited to this Crime Victims Group meeting by one of my dearest friends, Mary Bernice Barnes. She along with the other members of this group has a family member that was the victim of a murder.

I really came to this meeting to support Mrs. Bernice and to observe but ended up being their special guest for the evening. As I sat at the table, I took a closer look at the victims. I listened as Larry Nelson, Sr., the president of this organization, asked each victim how their cases were going. No one at the table had any results from the legal system. Several cases are still pending and some cases are not even being investigated. Just sitting at the table with them, I could see the void and the lack of closure in their lives but they are still determined to seek justice and to continue to support each other. They are receiving some support from City Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Mayor Harvey Johnson, District Attorney Robert Shula Smith, and from some investigators. However, many of the cases are nowhere near being solved. My heart ached for each member of this group. Their group needs our support because they are people with a purpose and they are working towards positive goals.

Mike Spann - Making Things Happen In Mississippi

Mike Spann - Making Things Happen
Mike "Vursatal" Spann is a 26 y.o. composer/producer for the group "Playa Connected" in Brandon, MS. I met Mike for the first time in April of this year and found out at that time,  just how musically inclined he was. Mike has a deep love for music and spends a great deal of time making new beats and sounds in his studio. The love of music is something he and I both share. Mike has been gifted with an ear for music and he is ready to share his gifts with all of you. I want the world to know about this music engineer. I asked him some questions last week and he responded:

Who inspires you?

I'm inspired by who I think is the greatest of all time, “Timbaland.” I say him because of his ability to create music out of almost anything (from recording a baby crying in one of Aaliyah's old songs to hearing about him using plastic cups in a beat to make a song). But I still give much respect to music made by Dr.Dre, Polow Da Don, a duo called The Runners, and can't forget about one of my favorites, Kanye West.

Are We Our Brothers Keeper?

m_8c5c3a48f3504953ac3ec2dd5db5c345“WHY IS IT THAT SOME BLACK PEOPLE SUPPORT EVERYONE EXCEPT EACH OTHER?”

I am on my computer every morning and I say good morning to everyone in my chat box. Most will respond and say good morning back. Some will ask how I'm doing, few will hold a conversation for a few minutes, and some will say absolutely nothing.

The other day I was doing my daily ritual, when a wonderful author by the name of Sandra Peterson Lott popped up and told me that I had made her day. I was trying to figure out what I had done to make her say that. Maybe she had read something that I wrote. She said that I had reached out to her and that many people don't do that. She said that she just wanted to thank me. I know it will sound corny but I was touched and brought to tears. Such a small gesture made someone’s day. I was honored and felt great the rest of the day. You never know what a person needs but God does and He used me to bring happiness to someone else.

We can all do that and I challenge you to.
