She's Luenell

Up The Way Magazine is constantly growing. With hardtimes upon many, we all could use a good laugh. I could tell you a joke or two myself. But, when I'm not working and have a minute or two to kick back, this is who makes me laugh. She's definitely funny and a Super Star. She's appeared in several films and music videos. She's constantly on tour around the globe. With a schedule that's quite demanding, she's shared herself with me for you. Ladies and gentleman, I present Luenelle.

Q: For Luenell, where did it all begin?

A: I was born in Tollette, Arkansas. At two months thru the age 5, I was brought to California. I lived in Berkley and Oakland. I was mostly educated in a white suburb of the Bay area called Asheboro Valley, California. I went to college in Hayward.

moneyI hadn't seen Dee or Dakim in about two weeks even though Dee had said to me that he was going out of town for only a few days. I got into the routine of going to college and it was nice. The thousand dollars I'd gotten from Dee came in handy, too. I bought some fresh gear, took a few chicks to some nice restaurants and such. I was still unclear exactly what the money was for or where it really came from or even about that day. I vaguely remembered throwing a gun over the bridge after Dee had given me the money after he and Dakim had gone into the building in Harlem.

"Yo, Jamel! Lemme holla at you a sec," Ice G called to me as I sat on a park bench by the basketball courts in my projects talking to Lisa. Lisa was Dee's little sister but she really wasn't so little anymore. Lisa was fourteen when I went upstate and a regular cute little

moneyWe took the Verrazano Bridge to the FDR drive on our way to Harlem. The angel dust that Dee and Dakim had introduced me to earlier was having a weird effect on my mind. It was like a new universe had been opened. A strange new reality that I kind of liked.  Of course I didn't know then how dangerous angel dust, PCP, was and how so many people had and would die because of it, but I knew I felt a sense of power surging through my veins, and a new consciousness before unknown to me.  If Dee was smoking dust, I figured it was cool. It wasn't like we was using regular dope, like coke or heroin, I told myself.  (continued from Street Persuasions, Part One).

"Yo, Jamel. I had Dakim dying laughing when I told him about Arty, upstate. Tell him, Jamel, Dee said excitedly. Dee and I shared the retelling of the story: Arty was this dude upstate with us at El Mira and Otisville, when we first got sent up. We were all cool with each other. But one day Arty decided to test me while he, Dee and myself were on the line for chow. I don't remember what it was about, but Arty and I had a few words with each other when he said, "Man, I'll bust your skinny a*#!"  Arty had a little weight on him from lifting weights and his arms were kinda swole. So, I guess he thought that it meant something.

Once A Cheater Always A Cheater

Once A Cheater Always A Cheater;

"I can't trust you anymore said, Elizabeth to Oscar whom she has been dating since high-school, her high-school sweetheart and the love of her life and Oscar was caught cheating for the fist time, Oscar replied why, why can't you trust me anymore it was a mistake liz, this is what he calls her when ever he wanted to smooth things out with her or get his way. Elizabeth put her hands on her hip and yells "because you cheated on me and we been together almost ten years'. Oscar then replies "What do you want me to do, you are a NAG and I cant stand you and your ways, thats when Elizabeth realized, he was making excuses for his behavior and she stood from the couch and went into the room and the room started spinning as she seen her life with Oscar flash before her eyes.

As she started thinking of her past with her Oscar, she asked herself if their whole relationship has been nothing but a lie and if the one night-stand that he had was the first time or a sign that she needed to see who he really was before they got married, she asked herself over and over again, if all the fights they used to have about him comming home late from work were because, she knew deep inside that he was out their cheating, she looked at him for answers but, he stood their silently and with a puzzled looked in his face. Elizabeth asked herself, who is this man? and is this the man that I am supposed to marry? Lord help me, she cried in silence, as her eyes began to fill with a load of tears. She got face to face with him and told him that he needed to leave immediately and that she needed a break from him so, that she can get her thoughts together. He did not put up a fight, packed his bags and left.

Days passed by and Elizabeth decided to call him and tell him that the little time they been apart was not a bad idea after all because, it will gave her time to think and he agreed with her that it was for the best because, he missed her dearly. She asked him to come over so that they can talk, the talks became more frequent and he started coming over on weekends and during the seperation he continued to help her out with the bills around the house, called her every day and he brough her self-esteem back up. He also started taking her places that she always wanted to go and lavishing her with wonderful gifts and trips over the next several months and even though Oscar wanted to make love to her, he put his feelings aside and waited until she eas ready and just went with the flow and did not ask for anything from her.

Elizabeth was ready to give in after six months apart but, before she did anything with him again she asked him to grant her one last request, that in order for him to come back home, they needed to start going to a couple's therapy for atleast a month and Oscar needed to come clean with her before they could move any further in the relationship, he agreed with no hesitation because he would do anything to show elizabeth he was ready to put the past in the past and Elizabeth was so trilled that he agreed that she told him that he could spend the night, in the morning they both awoke with smiles on their face and their minds made up that they needed the best therapist that money could buy and the therapy began the following week. They started going twice a week and it was going great for the both of them, as they learned how to communicate with each other better and she was learning to trust him again until, one day while in a therapy session they were being asked a series of questions and Oscar seemed a little un easy and hesitating to answer the questions asked, as if he was not being sincere.

Oscar was asked three last questions about the events which brought them to therapy, how long has he been cheating on her ? and with how many people ? and why? Oscar began to pase back and forth in the doctors office and then he gave Elizabeth and the Doctor a devilish smile, as if he was up to no good. The therapist asked him to sit down next to Elizabeth and to be 100% honest with her, he then turned  to Elizabeth and looked into her eyes and began to replied. He said to her, "I have been cheating on you, over the past eight years", "I had sex with every female I could, at clubs, bars, at females homes, in my car and where ever I could do it at", and I also had sex at work numerous of times and with some of your closest friends because, I hated the way you treated me as if I was a child and always trying to control me' and before she can get a word out, he also admited to having had sex with over 100 other females and let out a breath.

Elizabeth mouth was wide open and her pressure rised and her heart dropped she felt like her heart was ripped out her chest and thrown into a crowd who stump on it numerous times and all she could say was OMG!!! and she grabbed her purse and ran out the office yelling "You son of a (blank) feeling all destroyed inside she went to her car and drove off but, she was also feeling relieved that she knew the truth about him and that she could move on with her life.

Needless to say, that was the last session they ever attended together, never spoked to him again. God works in misterious ways, doesn't he? Elizabeth was very lucky to not have gotten some disease because, of Oscar careless ways.

That goes to show you, how quickly things can change for any of us. I think we all need to stop pertending that everything around us is perfect and that there is no room for this to story to hit home or something even worst. I am always careful with my heart and if I feel a slight suspicious about someone I am in a relationship with, I do my research and depending on what I find, I either let the issue go or leave them right were they stand, I dont have time to play with my heart or with my health, Aids & HIV do not discriminate.

Please do not ignore the signs or you will also end up regreting it later, like Elizabeth did. There are alot of us out there that do not ever realize, that we are sitting in the same room with an Oscar, this is why I decided to share this story with you to open up your ears and eyes.

What are your thoughts on this article and what would you have done if you were Elizabeth, would you have left Oscar the way she did or sticked around and try to make things work?.

Street Persuasion : Part 1

999975_know_hope_1I'm twenty one and I just got out of prison two weeks ago after doing three years for burglary. I got into Brooklyn College, thanks to student loans and grants I received. I still hang out sometime with my homeboy Dee, who dropped out of high school in the ninth grade. Although Dee and I are both from Stapleton (he lives one floor below me) we were never really cool until we ran into each other on Rikers Island and in prison too. I saw Dee knock dudes out up there and he knew about of the fights I had.

One was against this muscled weight lifting dude who had it out for me from the first day I walked into the cell block.

A Love Gone Astray

brokenheartAfter ten years of marriage and raising our two children, Tina told me, "Maybe we should see what it's like to date other people." I was taken aback, hurt, blindsided and dazed by the sudden blow. I thought that we were happy together but I guess it was just me who had been happy. Tina and I had been an item since junior high school before tying the knot, buying a house and raising our two children, Joshua and Monica. We were a typical middle class family: picnics, amusement parks, movies at the theatre. And I have to admit, Me and Tina were a good looking couple.

I had no idea what to do about Tina's proclamation. But after seeing that look in her eyes often enough - a look that said she was hungry for

Rikers Island

fightsceneThis time I would be going to jail for real. At sixteen I'd really be tested now. Rikers Island was one of the fiercest jails in the country and the largest jail complex in the world. It sat on an actual island near Laguardia airport in the borough of Queens, New York. The surrounding waters had fierce currents that have claimed many lives of would be escapees, much like the famed Alcatrez prison in California.

It didn't matter if you were in for only a week or two years, you were put together with mass murderers who were in forever. You had to be tough or get that way fast.

My first jail fight was something completely out of a comedy movie. I was doing sixty days for burglary. I was sixteen and it was my first time on Rikers. At the time it was two men to a cell. I had a cellmate who'd come in at the same time as I but this wasn't his first time. He was a few years older than me and knew the ropes and was getting cookies, cigarettes and other goodies on the juggle (which meant paying back double, even triple of what he borrowed). He'd offer to share his stuff with me and I turned him down. I'd heard stories from the older guys in my 'hood warning about accepting gifts in jail and avoiding being pressured to pay back more than you accepted. Basically a dude would befriend an unsuspecting cat, giving him cigarettes, food, or whatever. The poor sap thinks the dude is just looking out for him. But, when the time is ripe the dude pounces, asking, "So when you gonna pay me, man?" The victim is like, "Huh? But I thought..." And the dude says, "You thought what? That I'm some kind of sucker?", and pulls out a shank asking, "What you trying to pull? You gonna pay me one way or the other!" The victim realizes too late that he is in big debt, paying back triple or more and sometimes, and if he is a weak man, he might literally pay with his behind -literally.

Pay Attention...

MindHe knew that it would all end once he took his first shot. Martin was in a state of madness with nowhere to escape and things were happening fast. But it was so far out of his control. They were yelling at him and telling him to do things he knew were wrong. But he tried to fight them off and get them to leave him alone. Martin knew when he woke up in the morning that they were waiting for him and trying to convince him that he had to do it. It was giving him terrible headaches, he just had to escape.

They kept telling him that he had to take charge, had to get revenge and the time was now. “Make everyone pay who didn’t listen to him,” they said. It was like a chant being repeated over and over again. “How could you call yourself a man, if you don’t stand up for yourself,” was what they told him every chance they could. The more he heard them say these things the weaker he became.

First Martin had to get the gun from his father. This would show them that he was getting back at the others and taking a stand. It was his turn for revenge. Knowing just where his father kept his guns, all he needed was the keys to get in the case. But his father hadn’t talked to him in weeks because of him quitting school and moving out. It would be better to wait for his mom to get home alone so he could get in and get to the case.

me-n-mach Hopefully, everyone has a dream. In life we've all been in search of our destiny. Oft times we follow others, just hoping someone takes the lead. But at the end of the day, it's all up to you and I. Here's an uphill climb that's not impossible. It's hard work and these are the steps Colorz has taken in order to reach the top.

Q: Who is Colorz?
When I have people ask me that, I believe strongly enough that I can tell them that Colorz is the next big thing to make a change in Hip Hop. I believe that I bring a different feeling to the music that I do.

Q: Where are you from?
I'm from Fall River, Massachusetts. A small town just about 45 minuted from our state's capitol, Boston, Massachusetts. Where I'm from is a difficult place to be heard in music. It's such a small city. With so much talent smashing the competition in Boston, it leaves little room for a talent such as mine. However I'm willing to overcome the odds and put Fall River on the map
